The Jacobite and Harry Potter

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is the viaduct from the films and the locomotive type matches — but the Jacobite is a real scheduled steam service, not a themed ride.

Updated August 2026

The viaduct is real and it is the one from the films. The train is a genuine steam service that happens to look the part. It is not a themed attraction, and nothing on board is decorated.

That is the honest answer, and getting it clear before you book prevents the most common disappointment on this line.

What Is Actually the Same

The Glenfinnan Viaduct the Jacobite crosses is the viaduct that appears in the films — the twenty-one-arch curve above Loch Shiel is unmistakable and it is the reason this stretch of the West Highland Line became famous far beyond railway enthusiasts.

The locomotive type is of the right era, and the rolling stock is period 1940s–50s carriages, so the silhouette matches what you remember.

What Is Not

  • No decoration, no theming, no costumes. It is a working heritage railway service.
  • No trolley witch. There is a refreshment service; it sells tea.
  • Staff will call it the Jacobite, because that is its name — after the historic Jacobite political movement, which has deep local connections in Lochaber and predates the films by three centuries.
  • No Hogwarts. There is no castle at the end of the line. Mallaig is a working fishing port, and a good one.

Which Is Better Than the Alternative

A genuine 1940s steam train on one of the most scenic railways in Britain is a more interesting thing than a themed ride, and the people who enjoy the Jacobite most are the ones who booked it for the railway and the landscape rather than the franchise. The scenery does not need the association.

If the association is the whole reason for the trip, be aware that the experience delivering it best is standing on the hillside at Glenfinnan watching a steam train cross that viaduct — which is the shot from the films, is free, and does not require a ticket that sold out in June. Filming Locations Along the Line

The viaduct is the headline, and the surrounding country around Glenfinnan and Loch Shiel appears in several films of the series. Tours from Edinburgh and Glasgow that take in Glenfinnan usually cover the locations as part of a Highlands day rather than as a dedicated film tour — see Glenfinnan viaduct tours.

We are an independent guide and have no connection to the film rights holders or to the railway operator; the association is described here because it is what people are asking about, not because anything on this page is licensed.
